Here I will add news from monte Cucco as I hear it from Kathleen

Day 2, a shorter task off the normal south/west side of monte cucco.
Kathleen crossed the goal line pretty much equal first with Corrina.

In class 2, Johnny car blew his launch on his swift and broke a bone in his foot. He expects to end up in plaster so the competition is over for him.

Results for first day (top 10)
1 25 RIGG, KATHLEEN (Moyes LITESPEED S) GBR 747
2 2 PETROVA, NATALIA (Aeros Combat) RUS 590
3 9 TOBLER, CAROLE (Moyes LITESPEED S) CHE 503
4 1 SCHWIEGERSHAUSEN, CORINNA (RED BULL LITESPEED) DEU 499
5 31 GLAS, REGINA (Aeros Combat L12) DEU 493
6 7 DIEUZEIDE, FRANCOISE (Icaro Laminar Z9 13.2) FRA 481
7 3 WERNER, MONIQUE (Aeros Combat L12) DEU 479
8 20 KAMINE, AKARI (Icaro Laminar Z9) JPN 458
9 33 BAZAN, LAURA (Aeros Combat) ARG 434
10 29 YAKOH, MITSUKO (Icaro Laminar Z9 13.2) JPN 426

Looks like Kathleen has won the first day!
So far she is the only glider in goal. She found a low save that Corrina missed at about 600ft agl. It was quite windy, launch at Tre Pezzi (North East). The task can be seen at www.cucco08.org, going south to penino, and then north up to Gubbio and back into Sigillo.
Kathleen had an advantage over Corrina gliding into wind, despite Corrinas new Litespeed RS3.5 (Kathleen is flying my 3 year old Litespeed S4).
Pics on Jamies blog lonked below.

Opening ceremony is sunday with first task on Wednesday (2 practise tasks).
check Jamie sheldon's blog for news and pics.

Forcast according to the rather noddy "metcheck" is light winds with only a few showery days in the next 2 weeks.
17th July was too windy, Carl flew and advised the girlies not to bother. Huge lenticular clouds in the lee of the ridge.
15th/16th July was good flying if a bit blue and stable.

It appears Carl came in 8th in the French Nationals, but should have done so much better. There were a couple of really nice days, but low cloud base, stability and wind limited the number of tasks.
The first task was very windy and marginal, and many pilots did not complete the course by choice, but some did get to goal. Carl landed short but I don't know if it was by choice or not…
The second task, despite Carl being on the task setting committee, he managed to go to an incorrect turnpoint. At this point Carl was pretty close to Kathleen well down the scores…
The next two tasks Carl won, and moved up to 8th. so congratulations to Carl on his continued improvement and world class performance!

Soon there may be more of the French nats in Jamies blog, but its not there yet…something must be keeping her busy…
http://naughtylawyertravels.blogspot.com/

Kathleen now travels to the womens worlds in monte Cucco Italy, where Johnny Carr will also fly his swift in the rigid worlds. Just the two brits will be there.

Forget about the tennis my eyes are peeled on the Worlds, excellent work by the British team as they confirm their lead which was established from day 1. Not to mention Gary Wirdnam who is in 2nd place!

The organisers of the Pre-worlds have some fantastic web pages that allow us to keep up to date with how the team are progressing. For those that don't have the URLs the links are below.

Official web page with results: http://www.chabre2009.com

A blog that gives you almost an hourly update at: http://www.chabre2009.blogspot.com. The Brits have already had a bit of coverage, I think Carl is captured on film coming in to goal "not first, but close", Gordon gets a mention in a very good interview with Scott Barrett after the first task and I could swear that's David Shields jumping off a cliff into the waterfall… the nutter!

If anyone in Laragne reads this then wish the team the best. Any chance we could get some posts on this site so we can get the latest from inside the British camp or is there something else similar that I am missing?

Go the Brits!

This year the Blériot was set in the picturesque region of Limoges in central France. The landscape is pretty much how you might expect 16th century Britain to have looked; very green with large forested areas stretching as far as the eye can see. September 2nd was a training day but we spent it driving from the British Nationals at St. Andre. After an initial mix-up, having been sent to the wrong location for the reception, we finally arrived at Treignac to be greeted by the organisers, their Mayor, the local TV and media network and over 50 local dignitaries. They all wanted to ask us (in French naturally) everything we knew about paragliding! Needless to say this was not much…

BOS & NATS comps updates:

Relevant minutes from the Comps panel meeting (nov 2008)
referring to dates and venues for these comps.

682. UK NATIONALS 2008 (from draft planning meeting minutes)

a. Class 1 venue & dates

Laragne-Monteglin is the preferred venue with dates of 3-9 August - subject to local and FFVL approval. This would be back-to-back with the planned Dutch Nationals, an 8 day Cat 2 comp running from 26 Jul to 2nd August. We will again run our nationals in tandem with an Open FAI Category 2 meet i.e. all pilots will require FAI licences. WG has agreed to be the co-ordinator again. JA will check local club clearances and when that is received WG will approach the FFVL and deal with other local matters. Concern was expressed that we have better meteo information for this meet than we had in St Andre.

Action: JA, WG & NRB

b. Entry Fees.

These will remain £90 (approx 130) but a subsidy of £10 will be given to UK pilots with entry paid by 6th May 2008. Qualified pilots (i.e. those with AP) entering the nationals for the first time will again be subsidised to the full amount. UK pilots with a rating of Pilot will be accepted in the Cat 2 Open comp. Guest pilots from the host nation will receive a 50% discount on entry fees but this will not include a T-shirt.

Action: JA

c. Class 5.

A Class 5 national championship will be programmed to run alongside the flexwing championship and this will also have FAI Cat 2 status if a minimum of 6 pilots (including any guests) compete. Entry fees as for Class 1.

Action: JA & JC

683. BRITISH OPEN SERIES 2008 (from draft planning meeting minutes)

a. Format.

This was considered at length in view of the discussion on the mailing list but it appears to be impossible to reconcile the preferences of all. Although initially the panel wished to stick with some variation of the 3/5/5 day format it was eventually decided that we did need to cater for those who preferred non-BH weekends. We will therefore have three 5 day competitions next season, two of which will be over bank holiday weekends. The suggestion of running our meets abroad did not gain any support and, with two extra flying days in the calendar, there will be no provision for a back-up comp.

b. Costs and income.

The series continues to be self-funding but entry fees and discounts will have to change a little to reflect the extra 2 days of competition. They will be £50 per meet with a discount of £45 for pilots who pay for the full season by 1 March 2008 i.e. those who pay by that date will get all 3 comps for £105.

Action: JA

c. BOS 2008 - 1st Meet.

This will be the British Open and, subject to club agreement, will run 2 -6 May and be based at the Long Mynd; KR will approach Mark Stewart to be the local organiser. JA is not available for this meet and KR intends to fly in is; MS has provisionally agreed to act as Meet Director and will confirm this before Christmas. JA will apply for FAI Category 2 sanctioning and it is hoped this will provide an opportunity for UK pilots (female and Class 5) who are not currently eligible to get qualified before the 2008 Cat 1 championships. MS will publicise this on the Class 5 forum.

Action: MS, KR and JA

d. BOS 2008 - 2nd Meet.

Subject to negotiation with the local gliding club and site owners it is hoped to run this in the Derbyshire Dales, based at the club airfield. Dates are to be 9 - 13 July and KR will follow up on this. TB will arrange a fall-back position of going to the Yorkshire Dales for the same dates.

Action: KR and TB

e. BOS 2008 - Final Meet.

This will be based at Crickhowell (subject to club agreement) from 22 to 26 Aug with Graham Phipps as local organiser, although DB will book the Market Hall for scoring and accommodation for JA and himself.

Action: GP and DB

d. Classes.

These will be Class 1 and Class 5 at all meets. The scoring of a "Sports Class" (i.e. king-posted) was considered but there have been insufficient qualifying entries in recent years so this was not pursued.

The actual competition days are from July 23rd through August 1st with one rest day. His announced days are July 19 through August 2nd.

July 19th and 20th for registration. July 21 and 22nd for practice days.
