I reckon the little calendar of HG comps would be better on the front page than hidden in the 2009->2009-Comps menu, since this is my primary use of the site - to find out info about future BHGC events.

Above are 4 posts on a recent thread in the mailing list.

Below is what i get in my blasted email box from ONE post that has been replied to.

HG Competitions mailing list Message
Sent to:xxxxxx

I too worry about there not being a single point of contact like there is now and folks who are only on one form of communication will miss stuff, and then it become a job of work forsomebodyto be sure important stuff is sent out by different mediums.
One solution might be for there to be a summary list of the postings on such a furum, sent to this list every few days.
Often such forums have an option to have a summary list of posts sent to your registered email address with hot links to click through into the forum for what catches your eye.
In the long term a forum might work beter than a simple mailing list, as all the past posts on a subject can be searched and a moderator can make important stuff into a "sticky" so it always appears at the top of the forum etc.

I use such forums to discuss technical stuff for my job and other interests. They work really well for geting a quick answer from a well versed geek for that sort of thing.

However unless there are a lot of regular posters then forums just do not work as a means of communication, they just die, and a simple mailing list is superior.

Gordon

- Original Message -
From: Wayne Thompson
To: xxxxxxxx
Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2008 8:49 PM
Subject: RE: Re:forums

HG Competitions mailing list Message
Sent to: xxxxxxxxx

Will Greenwood wrote:
HG Competitions mailing list Message
Sent to: xxxxx

Hi All, I’m sorry but I disagree with all this splitting up into small groups for this and that, we have a forum and a good web site thanks to those that have provided it.

Sorry I do not get the point, we are a small community as it is

The HGCOMPS mailing serves it purpose for the 50-80 (?) pilots who need
to communicate about the BOS, etc ‘comps’ scene. The NXCL forum would be
for those interested in the pursuit of XC flying, and whilst there is
some cross over, I can envisage members from both groups not always
being interested in the other, so it makes sense to separate.

The only complaint I have a about the tool is the advertising on the
right & bottom of page (~20% ad space), but lets see how it goes. For
the RW forum we’ve been using Mark Leavesly’s forum tool for a few years
now and it works well with only a subtle 3% of ad space in the top left.
Nev

Hi Clive.

If it hangs for more that say 5 secs, just refresh your browser. This seems to give it the required kick up the arse.

Sometimes you will find that you have edited something but the "save " button is greyed out.
Stick you're cursor in the edit box some where, het return, and then the "save" button should become available to you.

I agree that editing these tables are a pain. Please be assured that i have tried various ways of doing the tick list.
The latest way is the best i have come up with.
I have tried using google spread sheets, and Zoho spread sheets, but they were less than successful, and also have their limitations.

As time goes on, a better way may be discovered, and if that is the case be implemented. If you have any suggestions feel free to offer them.

Thanks for having a play with it. You will find , as you become more ofay with it, that it becomes easier than might first meet the eye.

Regards
phil

Tried editing the tick list and my first two attempts to save changes made in the HTML resulted in a hang with a perpetual "Saving page ….." pop-up.

Eventually got it to save by choosing "Save and Continue" rather than "Save" AND entering something in the "Short description of changes" box - not sure which made the difference.

(Editing the raw HTML is an enormous PITA).

I have noticed this on occasions, admittedly more than i would like.
I have found that if it takes more than say 5 sec, refreshing the browser, will sort the problem.

Ok nigel, so we now have threeways !

V1

http://bhgc.wikidot.com/
Main disadvantage to this way, is it takes a little while to edit it, as there is so much on one page.
Also, as the items add up, the page becomes longer and longer.

V2

http://bhgc.wikidot.com/start%20blog
When it comes to editing , this by far the easiest way.
Type a name in the box, it automatically creates the page. Ad info. Job done.
BUT.. Cant do RSS on the "listing page"

V3

http://bhgc.wikidot.com/front-forum

This way uses the forum as the main input system.
Care has to be taken on the title of the tread, and the thread introduction box
Because it uses the forum, you cannot download pics directly. You must download the pics to a holding page pics-holding-page
Then you must link to that pic, or use the pic url

The layout is not as nice as in V2. but you CAN have RSS feeds.

I like both - the existing current page is best as the main start page for new and infrequent visitors.

The blog format is good for frequent visitors who are only interested in new information. If this had its own RSS feed it would be ideal.
