NATIONAL OPEN COMPETITION SERIES, INCLUDING ORIGINAL BRITISH OPEN
A flexible and accessible series of UK based national competitions for those pilots who wish to move up from club and Airwave Challenge competitions but are not yet ready to commit themselves fully to national championship level. You will find pilots from this level right up to national squad level taking part in these friendly comps.
The series is based on the popular British Open model rather than the old League and is totally UK based. Pilots can choose to enter one or more comp but do not have to commit themselves right from the start, however there is a discount for pilots who do so. Series trophies will be awarded utilising results from the following individual meets in 2008:
A 5 day meet based on Long Mynd/Mid Wales sites over the early May B/H weekend.
A 5 day meet based at Hawes for flying in the Yorkshire Dales & North Yorks in July.
A 5 day comp based on in Crickhowell over the August B/H weekend.
As these are all 5 day comps (as opposed to the usual 3/5/5 format) there are no plans to run a backup meet this season to cater for poor weather.
The British Open Series inidvidual competitions (i.e. the 3 meets mentioned above) will have winners trophies in all FAI classes that have a minimum of five competitors. There will also be day prizes, not just for task winners but for other good performances. There will also be Series trophies which will be awarded on each eligible pilot’s 6 highest scoring tasks, scaled down to a maximum of 500 points each, from all Series meetings competed at. Champions Trophies will be awarded for the series with the superb Jim Taggart Memorial Trophy going to the Series Class 1 champion. This will allow pilots to make a judgement on attendance based on weather/distance/work/family etc without totally blowing their chances. Pilots can choose to do part-comps e.g. just the B/H days.
Eligibility for entry to series meets is current BHPA membership with a minimum rating of Pilot.
All meets require GPS for turnpoint verification and time points. We will be using CompeGPS for GPS flight verification and you can check which models are supported - or decide which to buy - at their website. A small number of GPS units are available for loan from the Comps Panel for pilots who do not yet own one.
Entry Fees. Entry to each one of these 3 meets will be £50.
However pilots who pay for the full series by 1 March 2008 will get a £45 discount i.e. they pay only £105 for the year, later entries may still get a discount if paid by the start of the British Open but this will cost £120. Pilots paid up for the entire series will get a stylish free T-shirt.
